Hi! It’s Terrian & Yana, Creators and Hosts of the Melanated Conversations Podcast. We started Melanated Conversations out of the desire for a sisterly community that fostered positive and authentic expression of our voices on various topics that we experience daily.

Our stories are not often expressed from our lense. We shift this narrative and amplify our voices to topics with our perspectives in mind.

Our Narrative From Our Perspective

Every Monday, through the voices of guests of the podcast we connect and share our experiences and powerful stories of transformation.

In this week’s episode, we amplify the voice of Dr. Kortney Floyd James.  Dr. Kortney is a nurse scientist with research interest in maternal-child health disparities, specifically maternal mortality and maternal mental health.

Dr. Kortney Floyd James is a nurse scientist and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She holds a Ph.D. in Nursing from the Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing & Health Profession at Georgia State University. Dr. Floyd James has an extensive background in leadership, public health policy, and primary care as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. While practicing as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in a well-baby nursery on a postpartum unit, Dr. Floyd James' research interests related to maternal/child health disparities were born. Her dissertation explored the racial identity of Black mothers and its relationship with their maternal functioning, postpartum depressive symptoms, and bond with their infants.

Dr. Floyd James aims to secure a postdoctoral opportunity or Assistant Professor position at a university that will foster her desire to educate future nurses and be the foundation on which she builds her research career. Her future research will explore the influence of perceived discrimination, racial identity, and biochemical markers on maternal and newborn health outcomes.
